Inappropriate Urination
Article featured in City Kitty's April 2011 Newsletter

The most common reason people surrender their cats to shelters is urinating in the house. But why do they do it?

There are a hundred reasons why, but the most common is territorial. Too many cats in the same household could be an issue. Cats are incredibly territorial. It is one of the wild traits that has not been bred out of them. They have not been domesticated as long as dogs, so they run on the wild side.

I encourage you not to give up if you are facing this issue and please think before you add another cat to your existing household. You may want to create an outdoor enclosure to relieve the stress of having multiple cats. Training a cat to walk with a halter and leash can be helpful as well, to get the cat outside. I love Purrfect Fence and have this system installed on the side of my house. It is a safe proof enclosure that keeps the cats in and other critters from coming in. Check out their website to see a video of this system. Using flower essences can also help to reduce stress.
