Choosing Breeds
Article featured in City Kitty's December 2010 Newsletter

Choosing the right breed for your family is essential for everyone, including the cat. Although Persians and other longhaired breeds are beautiful, they are very high maintenance and require regular grooming, including a bath every 4-6 weeks. Some breeds are more active than others and will climb into places you don't want them. Just like with dogs, certain breeds of cats have genetic health issues that need to be addressed. Most reputable breeders will "breed out" these problems by screening the cats and then removing them from their breeding program.

If you choose to buy a pedigree cat it is always a good idea to check the Cat Fancier's Association website to see breeders in your area. You can also check at cat shows in your area, see the breeds close up and talk to breeders firsthand. CFA and TICA are the two biggest registry of pedigree cats.  You will not pay more for a kitten from a show home, and in some cases, less.

Kittens that are generally advertised come from kitty mills. If you choose to adopt, there are several shelters that have cats of all ages and breeds. Giving a cat a much needed home may feel best for you. You can also check on Petfinder.com to see cats up for adoption.
