Why Cats Mat
Article featured in City Kitty's September 2011 Newsletter

Unless your cat is a stuffed animal it will constantly grow and shed hair. In fact they produce a new coat every 6 weeks! This is why we recommend regular grooming every 6 weeks.

It's hard to understand why cats mat, but they do. Whether long hair or short hair, purebred or domestic, they will get matted over time. While regular combing will help to prevent the mats, the best defense is a thorough degreasing bath and blow dry. This is where the professional groomer comes in. Cats are naturally oily. Their skin produces oil that spreads throughout the coat over time.

Cats shed naturally. In time the shedding hair starts to stick together from the oils on the skin. A small tangle can turn into a large mat quickly. This is painful for the cat and pulls on their skin. Sores can develop under the mats on the skin. It is also a lot less stressful for the cat to be on a maintenance schedule then to wait until the cat is in poor condition.

Why should regular grooming be any different for a cat than a dog? Dogs are groomed every 4-6 weeks. Why not cats? Regular grooming will make your cat more comfortable and nice to live with. Call the salon or email for an appointment.
